The Xenix Cinema, which shows independent and unconventional film productions, occupies a very special position in the world of cinema and culture in Zurich. In its activities and film programmes this cultural enterprise, which during “Züri brännt” emerged out of the AJZ (Zurich Autonomous Youth Centre), takes a critical approach to political, social and cultural themes. Since the beginnings in 1981 the poster has been a fixed part of this scene and the varied – and at times unorthodox – designs have decisively shaped the cinema’s identity. Over thirty years of Xenix poster history includes more than 300 posters, a striking number of which were made by women. The exhibition brings together selected original posters as a testimony to an eventful part of Zurich’s urban history.
