Stefan Sagmeister, born in Bregenz in 1962, is currently one of the most important international graphic designers, with work featuring at all the major group exhibitions on graphic design, label design, CD covers and packaging. He has worked for the biggest names in the music business: his clients include the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and Lou Reed, and his outstanding creations for these musicians have won him numerous Grammies for graphic design and packaging. His provocative, often unconventional work is deliberately directed against artificial, sterile computer graphics. Without straining for superficial effects, his output combines a wealth of ideas with a craftsman's quality. He is more an inventor than a designer, examining materials and functions to create an individual solution for each commission, distancing itself from graphic mass production with wit and irony. This is the first one-man show of Stefan Sagmeister's work - taken over from the MAK Vienna - and it records the stages of an artistic development that led from Vienna via Hongkong to the foundation of Sagmeister Inc. in New York.
