A wide range of light sources has been available for centuries from the splint to the energy-saving lamp and high demands are made of design to stage them. The chandelier has special significance among the wide variety of lighting objects. It not only must hang from the ceiling and have a number of light sources and elements to refract light but is also an ornament and article of daily use, symbol and luxury item. The oscillation between masterful control of light and the communication of content through the fusion of the widest range of crafts into a "conveyor of light" positions the chandelier in the context of art. Rock crystal, glass or plastic – the chandelier is an integral element of interior design. Hardly any other design theme has had such a multifaceted, imaginative development over centuries. Museum Bellerive is now illuminating the subject and presenting the chandelier in "the right light" for the first time in an exhibition.
