Committal is one of the oldest rituals in cultural history. “God’s acre” is a place that shows
us transitoriness. At the same time, it arises from the need to make material something that cannot be grasped.
Cemeteries are among the first consciously designed places, and are—not only—intended for the eyes of
the living. This exhibition examines revolutionary concepts for cemeteries, and also artistic works from the fields
of design, photography and sculpture. Proposals of new designs for urns, coffins and other cemetery objects and
developments like the email cemetery show how our ways of treating the cemetery as a habitat are changing, and raise
new questions.
