Hofmann is a pioneering figure
in Swiss Graphic Design. He started his long period as
a teacher at the Gewerbeschule in Basel in 1946 and developed -
later in a lively dialogue
with Wolfgang Weingart - greatly appreciated educational skills
that made a
lasting impact on the international graphic design scene. Hofmann
recognized at an
early stage that technological developments demanded a radical revision
of the
methods used for teaching budding graphic designers. Instead of
merely imitating
other design practice he recommended patient and careful exploration
of the creative
principles. His characteristic combination of a humanistic approach
with openness to
experiment made its mark on generations of designers at home and
abroad. The cultural
posters by Hofmann in the show reveal the insights of an unerring
eye. A selection
of posters by pupils who are active today addresses the question
of the topicality of
his legacy. A publication in the «Poster Collection»
series will appear to accompany
the exhibition.
